On March 15 2008 Val Schier led a team of candidates in the elections for the Cairns Regional Council, a new entity formed by the amalgamation of Cairns City and Douglas Shire Councils.
The Cairns 1st team of candidate, pictured from left to right, was: Paul Matthews, Janine Aitken, Mark Buttrose, Val Schier, Jeff Martinuzzi, Richie Bates, Kirsten Lesina and Diane Forsyth.
Val Schier was successful in becoming Mayor, Diane Forsyth was elected Councillor of Division 7 and Kirsten Lesina, at 21, became youngest person ever elected to Council in the region when she beat the sitting Councillor to represent Division 4.
